The Manhattan Christian College men’s basketball team won two games this past weekend to clinch its seventh straight Midwest Christian College Conference regular season championship, with a 9-1 conference mark.
MCC defeated Ozark Christian College, 90-81 on Friday night. The Crusaders and Ozark had entered the game tied atop the conference.
Both teams got off to strong start, but late in the first half, Ozark opened up a 42-31 lead. The Crusaders, however, closed the half on a 12-2 run to cut the halftime deficit to 44-43.
MCC took a lead early in the second half that it would never relinquish. The Crusaders stretched the lead out to 65-57, but Ozark responded with a 6-0 surge to close the lead to 65-63. MCC was finally able to pull away when it used a 7-0 run to take a 79-70 lead.
The Crusaders were led by Lonnie Penner’s 24 points and 11 rebounds. Freshmen David Frost scored 15 points off the bench and Josh Camacho added 14 points.
MCC defeated Calvary Bible College 78-56 on Saturday when the Crusaders’ got off to another strong start. MCC opened up a 30-point lead in the first half on its way to clinching the conference title.
Penner again led MCC with 18 points, going 6 for 9 from behind the arc. Bryce Birtell scored 12 points, while Alex Hammack and Ben Svorinic chipped in with 11 points each.
MCC is now 16-9 on the season with three key region games at home this week against Grace University on Tuesday, Central Bible College on Friday, and Baptist Bible College on Saturday.
