SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Manhattan Christian College men’s basketball team opened the NCCAA Division-II National Tournament with a 120-111 victory over Multnomah University Tuesday.
Matt Doerksen led six Crusaders in double figures with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Sage Ruis and Lonnie Penner added 20 points apiece.
Multnomah brought an interesting style of play into the game as it pressed the entire game and spread the floor while shooting a ton of 3s.
The Crusaders were up to the challenge, however, as MCC connected on 13 of its first 15 shots to start the game.
But Multnomah would hang around, with the Crusaders taking only a 57-47 lead at halftime.
The Crusaders (23-11) scored the first five points of the second half, but Multnomah connected on its next nine 3-pointers to pull within two, 76-74. MCC responded and stretched the lead back to 84-76. Multnomah, however, continued to battle, cutting the deficit to 103-98 with about 4 minutes left before running out of gas.
With the win, MCC advances to play at 6 p.m. on Thursday against the top seed in the tournament, Ohio Christian University.
