The Manhattan Christian College men’s basketball team went on the road to Omaha over the weekend and picked up two victories. Friday night MCC took on Grace University and defeated the Royals 86-82. The Crusaders overcame a 47-36 halftime deficit, tying the game at 58 before stretching out a seven-point lead late in the game.
Grace made one last push and closed the gap to 81-80 with 29 seconds left, but the Crusaders closed the game out at the free-throw line. Bryce Birtell came off the bench to lead five players in double figures with 16 points.
Saturday, the Crusaders traveled across town to take on Nebraska Christian College. MCC struggled to shoot the ball against Nebraska’s zone, but the Crusaders were able to open up a 33-25 halftime lead. In the second half, Nebraska eventually led 54-49 with about six minutes to go. The Crusaders were able to rally behind Sage Ruis and Matt Doerksen, coming away with a 72-66 victory. Ruis led MCC with 21 points and Doerksen added 17 points.
MCC is now 6-7 on the season and they will close out their first semester schedule on Saturday with an exhibition against NAIA power Oklahoma Baptist University.
