MCC men top Barclay College

The Manhattan Christian College men’s basketball team picked up its fourth win of the season Tuesday night, defeating Barclay College 74-64 in Manhattan.

The Crusaders had a sluggish start to the game and the Bears jumped out to an early 7-2 lead.

MCC subbed for its whole starting five and the bench provided a spark by keying a 12-1 run to give the Crusaders a 14-9 lead.

The Crusaders, however, could never really pull away from Barclay — leading 33-27 at halftime.

MCC started the second half strong and opened up a 41-29 lead.

That didn’t last, however, as Barclay would respond with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 41-36.

That remained the pattern in the second half, as MCC would pull away and Barclay would close the gap until with about 5 minutes left MCC went on a 9-0 run to go up 62-47.

The Crusaders built their largest lead at 69-50, before a late run by the Bears produced the final margin.

Sage Ruis led MCC with 15 points and Matt Doerksen came off the bench to score a season-high 14 points.

Lonnie Penner added 13 points, while Bryce Birtell scored 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Jack Mitchell had 10 assists.

MCC is now 4-5 on the season and will be back in action on the road this weekend when the Crusaders travel to Omaha to take on Grace University on Friday night and Bellevue University on Saturday.
