MCC men drop Barclay

By The Mercury

The Manhattan Christian College men’s basketball team went on the road on Tuesday and defeated Barclay College 71-65,

MCC’s win avenged its only loss in conference play, as Barclay had defeated MCC earlier this season 78-77 in Manhattan.

Barclay jumped out to an early 10-5 lead, but the Crusaders stayed tough and behind the strong play Josh Camacho, who scored 15 first half points.

MCC went into halftime leading 33-29.

In the second half, MCC was able to maintain a slim lead, until it went on a 9-0 run keyed by two 3-pointers by Sage Ruis, which stretched the lead to 57-42.

Barclay wouldn’t go away and MCC proceeded to go cold from the field, which allowed the Bears to close the gap to 63-60 with a little more than a minute to play.

From there, however, MCC went 8 of 9 from the free-throw line to seal the victory.

Ruis was big in the second half, as he scored 20 points on his way to a 28-point outing.  Camacho finished with 22 points for the Crusaders.

MCC and Barclay had entered play on Tuesday in a three-way tie atop the conference at 6-1. With the victory, MCC stays in a tie for first with Ozark Christian College, which will be the Crusaders’ opponent Friday night at the City Auditorium in Manhattan.

With a win on Friday, MCC would clinch at least a tie for the regular season conference championship.
