The Manhattan Christian College men’s basketball team dropped a home contest against Southwestern College (Winfield), 74-69 on Tuesday night.
Southwestern jumped out to an early 8-2 lead to open the game and was able to maintain that margin throughout the first half. It closed the half on a 6-0 run to go into halftime leading 36-26.
In the second half, Southwestern stretched the lead out to 12 points before MCC rallied. Will Chisam came off the bench with the Crusaders trailing and he scored eight points to cut the deficit to 57-55.
But Southwestern stretched the lead back to 62-57 with about 5 minutes left. Sage Ruis hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 65-62. And then with Southwestern up 70-65, MCC hit 4 of 5 at the free-throw line to cut the deficit to 70-69 with less than a minute to play. MCC got a stop, but missed a jumper to take the lead with 21 seconds left.
Southwestern converted both free throws to go up 72-69 and MCC committed a turnover with 12 seconds left to seal the loss.
Ruis led the Crusaders with 18 points, while Jack Mitchell chipped 11 points. Chisam had 10 points.
MCC is now 0-4 on the season and will be back in action at home Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Faith Baptist Bible College (Ankeny, Iowa).
