The Manhattan Area Technical College men’s golf team competed in its first-ever tournament recently, marking the first event in any sport at MATC.

The Bison competed at the Swede Invitational hosted by Bethany College for a two-day event, March 7-8. The first day was held at the Elks Club in Salina and Day 2 at Turkey Creek in McPherson.

Five competitors from MATC were matched up with players from seven neighboring colleges of Kansas and Nebraska.

Patrick Mader tied for 32nd, Brent Kolterman was 40th, Craig Scofield took 41st, Travis Potter was 42nd and Eric McDaneld finished 43rd. The Bison will now head to Lawrence for the Ottawa University Invite Wednesday and Thursday at Eagle Bend Golf Course.

The MATC athletic department was founded in August of 2012 and participates at the National Junior College Athletic Association level. The Bison currently participate in women’s cross country and men’s golf.

MATC intends to introduce a number of other sports in the upcoming school year, with wrestling, basketball and soccer anticipated to be offered.
