Many with mental health disorders do not get help

By Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

I am writing as a member of the Pawnee Mental Health Services Board of Directors representing Riley County. May is National Mental Health Month. Pawnee has been providing mental health services for over 57 years to members of our community affected by mental illness and substance abuse disorders.

Mental health is essential to overall physical health and emotional well-being and is vital for success in life, school and work. It is estimated that mental illness will affect nearly one in four adults and one in five children in a given year. In spite of this, an estimated two-thirds of adults and youth who have a mental disorder do not receive the help they need.

Many people never receive the help they need because of the lack of information, stigma or concerns about the cost. For more information on the services at Pawnee Mental Health Services, please call 587-4300 or visit our website,, or “like” us on Facebook.
