Many contributed to success of Just Try It Youth Triathlon

By Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

The second annual Hy-Vee Just Tri It Youth Triathlon was held last weekend in City Park, and it was a resounding success. This not-for-profit swim-bike-run event is aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and friendly competition among our area’s youth. More than 150 kids aged 5-14 years competed, but the smiles the young racers and their parents wore as the youth crossed the finish line were the highlight of the event.

We would like to thank our title sponsor, Hy-Vee, for its very generous support of the event and the awards party, which included great food for the athletes and volunteers as well as games for the kids. Thanks also to the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department for hosting the event in City Park, with a special thank you to Kelly Cook and Mike Buchanan. Thanks also go out to the Riley County Police Department and the Bike Patrol for providing officers to monitor the bike course, ensuring that the kids were safe during the bike part of the race.

We would also like to thank the event sponsors, which included K-State’s College of Human Ecology, Hayden Orthodontics, Hearing Doctors of Kansas, Action Pact Design and Blue Sweatshirt.  Also thanks to the event supporters: Manhattan Running Company, Big Poppi Bicycle Company, The Path-finder, Manhattan Marlins, Man-hattan Cross Country Club, SMH Consultants and Body First Wellness and Recreation Center.

And finally, thank you so much to the 80-plus volunteers who helped out during the race. This event would not be possible without those of you who took time out of your Saturday morning to help the kids have a fantastic experience. We are already looking forward to next year;s event, Aug. 8, 2015.
