The American Legion Manhattan Manko Senior 17ers defeated the Oklahoma Grays 10-5 on Friday night of the KU Team Camp, but Manko’s recent run of success ended on Saturday with a 5-2 loss to Lawrence.
Manhattan took a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning, but Lawrence tied the game in the top-half of the frame. Then, with two outs and a runner on in the top of the fifth, Lawrence took control. Manko hit a batter, putting runners on first and second. Then a single scored a run. A passed ball allowed both runners to advance to second and third. Lawrence then hit a two-run double to give it a 4-1 lead.
On Friday, Manko fell behind 3-0 to the Oklahoma Grays after one inning. But the 17ers came roaring back with a five-run fourth to take a 5-3 lead, and proceeded to add three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to win easily.
Andrew Leary walked to lead off the fourth inning. Chris Klug, who went 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, singled. Josh Mullin then doubled home both runs to cut the deficit to 3-2. Dustan Whipple struck out swinging for the first out, but Caleb Gorman followed with a sacrifice fly to score the tying run. With the bases empty, Jonah Webber ignited a small two-out rally. Webber singled, then advanced to third on Kellen Myers’ single. Josh Klug then reached on a run-scoring error by the Lawrence defense. Mike Leeper followed with a base on balls to load the bases before Bret Fehr singled home the fifth run of the frame.
Mullin went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs while Webber added two hits as Manko outhit the Grays 13-8.
