In a makeshift tournament due to the rain, the Manhattan Optimist 18-and-under Moxie played two pool play games and then competed in a four-team single elimination tournament this past weekend at home.

In the opening game, Moxie was successful with a 6-2 over the Lady Indians of Manhattan. All six runs were scored in the decisive fifth inning.

Aided by a hit batsman and walk, a single by Kayla Boltz scored the first run, and then Alexis Campuzano had a single that scored two runs. Shannon Caffrey singled and Abbie Plummer had a double that scored Mariah Kinderknecht.

Blair Campbell pitched for the win, allowing eight hits, while striking out five.

In the second game of pool play, the Moxie was matched up again with another Manhattan team, the Sting.

In a game that went seven innings, neither team could plate a run. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.

Brynn Hammett pitched for the no decision, allowing three hits and striking out two.

In the final game of Sunday’s play, the Moxie faced the Sting again, losing 4-3. Campuzano doubled in the game. Other singles included Linsey Kramer, Caffrey, Kinderknecht, and Alexis McCormick with an RBI single. Blair Campbell pitched allowing seven hits.

The Moxie is now 3-1-1 on the summer and will travel to Topeka next weekend for a tournament.
