Manhattan native wins AAU title

Sam Hankins won the AAU national title in the javelin throw for boys 12 and under at the AAU Junior Olympic Track and Field Championship meet, held in Ypsilanti, Mich. Hankins set a national record with his final throw of the meet at 140-11. He finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 104 feet. Hankins has been a member of the Manhattan Track Club for five seasons and has qualified for the national meet each year in a throwing event. He is coached by Ivan Hartung, a student-athlete at Kansas State and former Manhattan Track Club AAU national champion in the javelin in 2008. Hankins attends Bergman Elementary School in Manhattan and is the song of Kevin and Bonnie Hankins.

Other Manhattan athletes participating in the national meet included Bailey Wichman in the 10U high jump (8th place, 4-feet), Ethan Gruber in the 10U javelin (20th place, 83-7) and shot put (20th place, 25-7 1/2), Keaton Koenig in the 13U pentathlon (12th place, 1,710 points) and Jamison Hankins in the 16U 3,000-meter racewalk (8th, 20:00.67).
