The Manhattan High girls’ basketball team opened its season with a 53-47 win over Derby Friday night, despite a scrappy effort from the visiting Panthers.
The Indians were able to separate themselves early in the fourth quarter after a back-and-forth game in the first three periods behind six straight points by Amara Ehie, who finished with a team-high 13.
Derby was led by Grace Mitchell’s 14 points and Haley Mills’ 12.
Both teams battled foul trouble all night, with Manhattan committing 22 fouls and the Panthers logging 23.
The Indians’ depth was key as top scorers from last season Darby Price and Caroline Ballard each battled foul trouble and finished with a combined 12 points. The Indians had nine players score.
