Man shoots loose dog on Fremont

By Katherine Wartell

A man shot and wounded a dog that approached him while he was walking his dogs near 6th and Fremont Tuesday.

Lt. Josh Kyle said citizens reported hearing a shot fired at approximately 5 p.m. and said that after an investigation, officers found a large, brown Mastiff belonging to Michael Oakley, 29, 602 Fremont St., had been shot.

Kyle said the dog had run up to the man, who was not identified, causing him to fall backward off the curb. He said the man then shot the dog in the front leg.

Riley County EMS transported the man to Mercy Regional Health Center for back pain, Kyle said.

He said officers filed a report for the unlawful discharge of a firearm in the city limits, but no arrests have been made.

Oakley was cited for allowing his dog to run at large.
