Man loses $110,000 in mortgage scam

An elderly Manhattan man has lost approximately $110,000 after falling victim to a home-mortgage scam over the past two months.

Officer Matt Droge, with the Riley County Police Department, said the 80-year-old man was sent forms that appeared to be bank statements noting that his mortgage payments were past due and that his house was pending foreclosure.

Droge said the man gave the scammers his bank information, thinking they were with the Bank of America.

The department is investigating the crime, which was reported by the man Tuesday, as a theft.

Droge said the man was contacted by the scammers in December 2012 and that the thefts continued to Feb. 1.

In an effort to avoid becoming a victim to these scams, Droge said people should be on the lookout for letterheads that appear off and misspelled words, and to always follow gut feelings.
