An Ogden man is in police custody on a charge of first degree murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s 6-month-old baby.

Michael Dechant, 19, was arrested Monday morning on charges of first degree murder and child abuse after police were called to his Ogden apartment at 203 Seventh Street at approximately 5:20 p.m. Friday for a report of an infant not breathing.

The baby, whose name and sex were not made public, was transported to Mercy Regional Health Center before being flown to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

Officials said the baby was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m. Monday.

Officers originally arrested Dechant on Saturday morning for aggravated battery before amending the charges.

Police did not release whether Dechant lived with his girlfriend and the child or whether they believe he was simply visiting the apartment. The name of the child’s mother was also not released.

Dechant is confined to the Riley County Jail on $500,000 bond.
