An Ogden man accused of killing his girlfriend’s 6-month-old baby made his first appearance in Riley County District Court Monday afternoon.

Michael Dechant, 19, was arrested Monday morning and appeared in front of Judge David Stutzman that afternoon to be read his formal charges of first-degree murder and abuse against a child younger than 18.

Dechant was first arrested for aggravated battery on Saturday after police were called to his apartment on 203 Seventh St. in Ogden Friday night for reports of an infant not breathing.

The child was taken to Mercy Regional Health Center and later flown to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. The baby was pronounced dead early Monday morning and Dechant’s charges were amended.

The identity of the mother and baby have not been released.

A status hearing to set Dechant’s preliminary hearing was set for Tuesday, March 26, at 1 p.m. in front of Magistrate Judge William Malcolm at the Riley County Courthouse.
