Two area athletes took home first-place medals at the state track meet on Friday in Wichita, while others found a spot on the podium at Cessna Stadium.
Manhattan High’s Logan Mahan captured the crown in the Class 6A long jump, reaching a distance of 22-02.75 on his best attempt.
Rock Creek’s Elizabeth Herrs won the first of her three events for the weekend, reaching a distance of 131-11 to take the Class 3A discus title. Herrs also finished first in the javelin and fourth in the shot put on Saturday.
Alaina Schroeder was third in the 3,200-meter run for Manhattan, while Mahan was fourth in his second event of the day, the triple jump. Terrale Johnson was third in the shot put, Tia Cooke was fourth in the triple jump, and Jacob Holloway was seventh in the javelin.
Jordan Routh took fourth in the 3,200 for Wamego, while Elizabeth Evans was fourth in the discus.
Rock Creek’s Aaron Kuecker was second in the high jump, while several other Mustangs just missed medaling.
Adam Koch had a seventh-place finish for Frankfort in the Class 1A 3,200.
Valley Heights’ Elijah Smith took second in the 1A triple jump and fourth in the long jump.
Most of the area’s athletes weren’t scheduled to compete in finals until Saturday, although many ran preliminary races on Friday.
