Magazine names Kite’s among top college bars in nation

By Bryan Richardson

Business Insider magazine has named Kite’s Bar and Grill as one of the 31 best college bars in the United States.

Rusty Wilson, owner of Kite’s, said this is the most prestigious award the bar has won, although Kite’s previously has received recognition from publications such as Sports Illustrated and Playboy.

“Running a business like this, especially in a competitive market, it can be very difficult to build your brand,” he said. “To be recognized for that work is very rewarding.”

The website listed the “Will Ferrell Challenge” as one of the bar’s spotlight events. The challenge, which involves eating a 3-pound hamburger, is named after the actor — following a 2008 visit during which he ordered the burger.

Wilson said he attributed the bar’s placement on the list to its staff.

“I spend most of my time trying to hire the right people and keep the morale of the organization as high as I can keep it,” he said.

Wilson said he isn’t sure how or when the bar would celebrate the top 31 achievement but mentioned 31-cent hamburgers and sandwiches as a possible idea.
