The Luckey Junior High track and field team won two of four team championships at the Blue Valley League championships last Thursday in Waterville.
The Cardinals edged Washington County 142-138 to win the eighth grade boys league championship, and the seventh grade girls outdueled host Valley Heights 115-99 to win that division.
Mike Zabel won four events in the eighth grade boys’ division. He set league and school records in the 200-meters (24.45) and 400 (54.93). Zabel also won the high jump and triple jump. Ethan Levine was the only other event winner for the eighth grade boys, taking the 800 title with a time of 2:26.
In the seventh grade girls’ division, Cara Melgares won three league titles, taking the 400, 800 and 1,600 titles. Georgia Hatesohl set a school record in winning the 100-meter hurdles in 17.43, while Morgan Feldkamp placed second in four events: long jump, 100 hurdles, 800 and 1,600.
Other individual champions for Luckey at the meet were Macie Frakes in the girls’ eighth grade 100 hurdles; and Christina Wankum in the girls’ eighth grade 1,600.
The meet wrapped up a strong sports season for the Luckey program, which included an undefeated league season for the football team; third-place finishes by the girls’ volleyball and basketball teams; and fourth place for the boys’ basketball program. The Cardinals also were league champions in varsity and junior varsity Scholar’s Bowl.
This is just the second year in the Blue Valley League for Luckey Junior High.
