Lottery scam reported

A 73-year-old man reported that he was scammed out of $40,000 over the course of several months after thinking he had won a lottery prize.

Officer Matthew Droge said Edward Phelps, Manhattan, was contacted over the telephone in November 2012 by a person claiming Phelps had won a monetary prize.

Droge said the person told Phelps that he needed to send money to clear the prize winnings. Over the course of six months, Phelps sent $40,000 through the mail to the unknown suspect.

Droge said police are unsure who is behind the scam, but said the case is under investigation.
