Kansas State junior wide receiver Tyler Lockett was one of a record 151 nominees for the 2013 Allstate/American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team, the organizations announced this week.
Lockett, one of 67 players from the FBS and six from the Big 12 up for the award, is the fifth Wildcat in the last six years to be named a candidate for one of the most prestigious off-the-field awards. Last season, quarterback Collin Klein earned a nod on the Good Works Team.
A product of Tulsa, Okla., Lockett has not only made an impact on the football field but also in the Manhattan community. A team captain who holds a 3.193 GPA, Lockett is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) through which he has visited retirement centers, participated in Cats in the Classroom as he reads to students or helps teachers with classroom activities, Adopt-a-Family during the holiday season and assist with elementary school carnivals.
On the field, Lockett is one of the nation’s most dangerous kickoff-return men as the 2012 All-Big 12 performer ranked third nationally in kickoff-return average at 32.76 last season, while his career 33.8 yards-per-return are tops among active players. Lockett’s career average and four kickoff-return touchdowns rank second in both school and Big 12 history entering the 2013 campaign.
Lockett also hauled in 44 passes for 687 yards and four touchdowns last season, giving him 933 yards and seven touchdowns in his two-year career. He enters his junior campaign just 67 yards away from becoming the school’s 27th career 1,000-yard receiver.
From the nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Allstate/AFCA Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members will select the 2013 Good Works Team. Comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA, the final roster of 22 award recipients will be unveiled in September.
In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining a strong academic standing.
The Wildcats kick off the 2013 season on Aug. 30 at home against North Dakota State at 7:30 p.m.
