Local police lend hand in Harveyville

RCPD officers are assisting Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s office deputies in Harveyville following Tuesday’s tornado that killed one, left 13 injured and devastated the much of the town.

Lt. Jay Mills said that, as of Thursday morning, 24 RCPD officers have assisted the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s office, working in three separate shifts throughout the day.

Mills said that on Wednesday, officers helped to secure the perimeter and manned checkpoints around the town. He said officers described the scene as pretty chaotic Wednesday morning, but that once more agencies arrived in town, things calmed down.

He said the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s office is a pretty small agency and that the RCPD is doing everything it can to help them out.

Wabaunsee County Sheriff Doug Howser requested assistance from local area agencies for two days, but has since asked for assistance through Monday, Mills said.

He said the RCPD would continue to provide assistance but will not be able to send as many officers each day.
