Local man wins new car at bingo

A Manhattan resident won a new car while playing bingo on Saturday.

Alex Bender, a civilian employee on Fort Riley, went to Morale Welfare Recreation Bingo on Saturday at the insistence of his friends.

The final bingo game of the evening was to win a new car. Bender was the one with all the right numbers. This weekend, the organization hosted its first “Mega Bingo” at the Rally Point on the fort. The Mega portion was in reference to more than $40,000 in cash and prizes, including a new 2012 Buick Verano.

Dawn McCarthy, commercial sponsorship coordinator for MWR, said there had been inquiries into giving away bigger prizes.

As a result, the organization contacted Holm Automotive on Fort Riley who donated the car.

McCarthy said the proceeds of bingo go toward prizes for the games. She also said it has not been determined if the bingo group will hold another Mega Bingo event.

Bender will take possession of the new car on Wednesday in Abilene, where the dealership is headquartered.
