The Manhattan Optimist Lasers 18-and-under fastpitch softball team went 5-1 over the weekend to finish second in the Manhattan Bite Outta the Lil’ Apple tournament.
The Lasers opened pool play on Saturday with a 11-0 win over the Colorado Bulldogs. Breanna Foster had three hits to lead the Lasers offensively. Megan Srna added a triple, while Aubrey Jung, Bailey Elliott and Alex Perez each doubled. Jung tossed a perfect game in the circle for the Lasers, while striking out five.
In their second Saturday contest, the Lasers defeated the Overland Park Storm 5-1. Elliott led the Lasers’ seven-hit attack with two hits, including a double. Blair Campbell added a double and was also the winning pitcher, as she stopped the Storm on two hits, while striking out five.
In their final pool play game Saturday evening, the Lasers defeated the Flint Hills Wind 5-0. Emmalee Chrest and Campbell had two hits apiece. Hodges held the Wind to one hit and struck out four.
The Lasers’ 3-0 pool play record resulted in a first seed and a first-round bye for the Sunday single-elimination tournament.
In their first bracket play game, the Lasers defeated the Topeka Legacy 6-1. Foster had two hits to lead the nine-hit attack. Hodges and Paige Divine each knocked in two runs. Campbell and Hodges shared the pitching duties.
In the tournament semifinals the Lasers shut out the Olathe Vipers 4-0. Jung struck out seven and allowed only three hits. Campbell had one of the Lasers’ four hits and knocked in two runs.
For the second week in a row the Lasers faced the Topeka Splash in a tournament final and again the Lasers came up just short as they lost 4-2 in an extra-inning international tie-breaker.
The Lasers could only muster two hits as Elliott doubled and Hodges singled to knock in one of the Lasers’ runs. Hodges was also in the circle for the Lasers.
The Lasers are 14-5 this season and will next be in action this weekend at an invitational tournament in Lincoln, Neb.
