The Manhattan Optimist 18-and-under Lasers opened their 2013 tournament season by winning five out of six games in the ASA Memorial Day Invitational tournament in Olathe this past weekend.
The Lasers opened pool play on Saturday afternoon with a 9-3 victory over the Blue Springs (Mo.) Sharks.
Bre Foster, Kylie Smith, Aubrey Jung, and Megan Thompson recorded two hits each to spark the Lasers attack, and Allie Massanet contributed a double and three RBIs.
The Lasers next defeated the Club Elite Classics (Mo.), 3-0, behind RBI singles from Smith, Jung, and Paige Divine.
The Lasers closed out Saturday with a 6-3 loss to the St. Louis (Mo.) Nemesis. Foster led the Lasers with a single and a triple. Smith chipped in two hits as well, and Mariah Stringfield added an RBI single.
On Sunday, the Lasers continued pool play with a 5-0 win over the Jefferson City (Mo.) Lady Jazz. Bri Womack, Jung, and Divine each had a hit, run scored, and stolen base as part of a balanced Lasers attack.
The Lasers then defeated the FBC Angels-Edwards (Kan.), 10-0, in a contest shortened by the mercy rule. Foster led the way with three hits and four runs scored, while Divine had a single and triple to drive in three runs. Smith and Jung also had multi-hit games.
The Lasers closed out pool play with a 7-3 win over the Monarchs99. Divine again had two hits, and Blair Campbell and Suzanna Gevock each had an RBI double. Kayla Lough singlehandedly squelched a Monarch rally with a sparkling unassisted double play.
The Lasers finished pool play tied for the top spot with a 5-1 record. Inclement weather forced a cancellation of bracket play on Monday.
Jung and Campbell combined to handle the pitching duties for the weekend. The pair struck out 26 and allowed just six earned runs in 29 innings. Offensively, Bre Foster led the way with nine hits for the weekend, followed by Smith and Jung with eight hits apiece, and Divine with seven.
The Lasers will play at Clay Center this weekend.
