KSU student drops out of Kansas House race

Kansas State University student Ben Wilson decided to withdraw his candidacy on Saturday for the Kansas House of Representatives primary race.

Wilson, a music major at the university, filed to run on March 21 as a Republican.

But he said as he saw the list of candidates grow for Rep. Vern Swanson’s 64th district seat, he decided to withdraw.

Those candidates include Swanson’s wife, Susie, of Clay Center and former Kansas State Board of Education member Kathy Martin — also of Clay Center, whom Wilson said he would support.

“I think it’s the right thing,” Wilson said. “It was the hard thing to do.” But after making the decision, Wilson said he’s happy with it.

The 64th district makes up of Clay County and some of Riley County.
