Kapaun softball rallies to beat Hays

Despite trailing 4-0, Kapaun Mt. Carmel came back to beat Hays 7-6 on in the opening day of the Class 5A state softball tournament on Thursday at the Twin Oaks Softball Complex.

The Crusaders trailed 3-0 after the third inning and Hays added a fourth run in the bottom of the fifth. Kapaun scored six runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead and then added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Hays rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t pull off their own come from behind effort.

Freshman pitcher Kody Ross took the win for the No. 6-seeded Crusaders in the upset of Hays. Hannah Hearld took the loss.

Adrienne Esposito led the Crusaders with two doubles, while Kylie Brown led Hays with a home run.
