K-State’s Weldon qualifies for U.S. Public Links

Kansas State men’s golf senior-to-be Kyle Weldon will compete in his second straight U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship after winning a qualifying event, Monday and Tuesday, at Aberdeen Golf Club in Eureka, Mo.

After going wire-to-wire to win the qualifying event last year, Weldon had to come from behind as he shot an even-par 71 on Monday before firing a 3-under-par 68 during Tuesday’s second round.

Weldon’s 36-hole score of 139 was three strokes better than a pair of golfers at even-par 142.

Last year at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, Weldon carded a two-round score of 141 to enter match play ranked No. 21. He won his first match, 4&2, but fell in Round 2 to eventual champion, Jordan Niebrugge, 6&4.

The 89th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship will be July 14-19 at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton. The first two days will be stroke play, as the field will be cut to 64 competitors for six rounds of match play.
