Kansas State track and field standout Reinis Kregers was named Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for his performance this past weekend in the decathlon at the Sam Adams Multi in Westmont, Calif.
The sophomore finished second at the Multi, setting personal bests in four of the decathlon’s final six events.
Sitting in seventh place after the first day of competition, Kregers mounted a stellar comeback that saw him finish Day 2 of competition with 7,304 points — less than 50 points behind the multi-event winner, Chico State’s Patrick J. Smith (7,351).
Kregers set personal bests in the 400 meters, 110-meter hurdles, javelin throw and 1,500 meters.
Kregers’ final score at the Multi currently has him ranked No. 9 in Division I, No. 6 in the West Region and No. 2 in the Big 12. The Vecumnieki, Latvia native also holds Big 12 Top-20 marks in eight separate events, including the No. 5 mark in the javelin throw.
The weekly accolade is the first of Kregers’ career as well as the first awarded to a K-State athlete this outdoor season.
