Garrett Spencer, a 19-year-old Kansas State student, who had only been skiing for two days, became the 17th official fatality on Colorado’s ski slopes this season, according to media reports.

Spencer, who is from Hesston, lived at Moore Hall on campus.

He was skiing on a green run Saturday without a helmet when he hit a tree, Wolf Creek Ski Area owner Davey Pitcher told the Denver Post. Spencer was declared dead at the scene of the accident.

The Alamosa County Sheriff’s office did not release a statement.

The 17 deaths equal the unofficial record set in 2008. There are two other ski or snowboarding related deaths this season that occurred either out of bounds or on closed areas in Colorado’s high country.
