The Kansas State women’s tennis team will send a pair of student-athletes to the ITA Regional in Tulsa, Okla., while a quartet will remain in the state to compete at a tournament in Lawrence this weekend.
The ITA Regional will be contested Friday through Monday at the Michael Case Tennis Center, while the KU Tournament will be Friday through Sunday.
The two players heading to Tulsa for the ITA Regional are junior and No. 14-ranked Petra Niedermayerova and freshman Ivana Kubickova. In addition to competing in the singles bracket, the duo will pair up to compete together for the first time in doubles.
Niedermayerova won five straight singles matches to begin the fall season (5-1) before dropping her quarterfinal match at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships on Oct. 5 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Niedermayerova owns a career singles record of 53-24 (.688), including a 15-13 mark against opponents ranked in the ITA national singles rankings. Niedermayerova’s career mark in straight-set matches stands at 45-13 (.776).
Coupled with her quarterfinal effort at the Riviera/ITA event this season, if Niedermayerova reaches the singles quarterfinals of this weekend’s ITA Regionals, she has the opportunity to receive an at-large bid into the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 8-11. If she is able to reach the event, it would be her second straight appearance at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Kubickova will be competing in the third event of her career with the Wildcats this weekend. To date, Kubickova has carded a 4-2 record in singles play and is 4-4 in doubles play.
The four student-athletes headed to the KU tournament this weekend are seniors Carmen Borau Ramos and Ana Gomez Aleman, sophomore Amina St. Hill and freshman Miranda Erisman. Borau Ramos and St. Hill each enter the weekend with 3-3 records this fall.
This weekend marks the final tournaments of the fall season for K-State. The Wildcats will open their spring schedule on Jan. 18-19 at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga.
