PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Kansas State women’s tennis players Karla Bonacic and Petra Niedermayerova started their week at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships on Tuesday with qualifying play in both doubles and singles at the Riviera Tennis Club.
The No. 28-ranked doubles tandem of Niedermayerova and Bonacic tallied an 8-1 win over the No. 49 Danielle Lao and Valeria Pulido from USC in the first round of qualifying play.
Niedermayerova and Bonacic are 3-2 this season and own a 17-18 mark when paired together. After Tuesday’s win, Bonacic owns a career doubles record of 42-50, while Niedermayerova is 36-32.
Today, Niedermayerova and Bonacic faced Julia Elbaba and Maria Fuccillo of Virginia in their first match. The K-State duo needed to win two matches Wednesday to advance to the main draw of doubles play beginning Thursday.
Playing in her first career Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship singles match, the No. 69-ranked Bonacic suffered her first loss of the season with a 6-0, 6-4 defeat to Kyle McPhillips of UCLA. Bonacic, a senior from Split, Croatia, had her personal eight-match winning streak snapped with the defeat. She owns a career record of 58-34 (.630) and is 3-1 this season.
Main draw play at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships begins on Thursday, as No. 14-ranked Niedermayerova will begin her drive for a second straight semifinals appearance in singles. At the 2011 event, Niedermayerova tallied three victories over top-30 ranked opponents to reach the semifinals and earn a berth into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Players that advance to the quarterfinals in singles and doubles play of the main draw at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships will qualify for the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 8-11.
