LAWRENCE — The Kansas State women’s tennis team finished its opening weekend at the KU Invitational strong with four singles victories — including a pair of titles from its two nationally ranked players.
K-State finished the opening weekend with an overall team singles mark of 15-6.
Junior and No. 14-ranked Petra Niedermayerova cruised to the Draw A singles title with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Veronika Blaskova of Wichita State.
The native of Brno, Czech Republic, is now 51-23 (.689) in her career, including a 43-12 (.782) record in straight set matches. The win was her 10th in her last 12 matches.
Senior and No. 69-ranked Karla Bonacic eased her way to her eighth straight win dating back to April 1 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Belen Luduena of Kansas in the Draw B title match.
The product from Split, Croatia, boosted her career record to 58-33 (.637), which includes a career mark of 41-28 (.594) in straight-set matches.
With five singles wins, Bonacic will move into a tie for sixth on the K-State career singles wins list.
Joining Niedermayerova and Bonacic in the win column on Sunday were sophomore Carli Wischhoff and senior Carmen Borau Ramos.
Wischhoff notched a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (8) win over Hannah Kelley of Abilene Christian in the third-place match of Draw D.
Borau Ramos won for the fifth time in her last seven matches with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Nastya Trubica of Kansas in the Draw G third-place match. The veteran from Jaca, Spain, owns a career record of 32-49 and is 24-33 in her career in straight-set matches.
A majority of the K-State roster will travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Hoosier Classic on on Wednesday.
Niedermayerova and Bonacic will represent Kansas State at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship in Pacific Palisades, Calif., beginning Thursday.
Bonacic has been moved into the qualifying round of the singles event, while Niedermayerova is in the main draw of singles play. Bonacic and Niedermayerova are also playing together in doubles action and will play in the qualifying round.
