The Kansas State rowing team dominated its in-state rival Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday to retain the Kansas Cup at the Sunflower Showdown.
K-State swept the competition winning all five races, but it was the 1st Varsity 8 of coxswain Weatherly Butler, Traci Smiley, Hanna Wiltfong, Adria Ley, Anna Young, Allison Dorau, Nicole Burdiek, Aly Bronder and Ali Peters that closed the competition on a strong note and receive their first Conference USA Boat of the Week award.
The Wildcats defeated the Jayhawks by nearly 11 seconds in the final race of the day, crossing the finish line in 7:13.4 compared to the 7:24.2 of KU.
The Wildcats won the Kansas Cup, 20-0, and the win by the 1V8 means the seniors on the crew have lost only once head-to-head to Kansas in their careers.
This is the second overall C-USA Boat of the Week honor for the K-State program after winning once last season as well. K-State’s next competition will be at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship next week in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
