Jeff County North 64, Sterling 62

By Paul Harris

Jeff County North pushed the Sterling Black Bears into the first overtime of the 2A state tournament, but the Bears prevailed in overtime for a 64-62 victory.

The Chargers looked to take the lead on two long jump shots, but both missed. Dalton GrandPre had a chance to tie the game on a putback but the ball slipped off his fingers and went out of bounds.

The Bears’ Seth Humphreys sank the game-winning points at the free throw line for two of his game-high 23. Austin Maxwell contributed a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to the Bears’ effort. Chad Bennett added 11. Cory Knoll led the way for the Chargers with 19 points and Dalton Minor had 14.

The Chargers struggled against the Bears stingy defense and committed 19 turnovers to one assist. Sterling pushed the lead out to 10 points at the end of the first quarter behind the hot shooting of Humphreys and Jake Jaderston.

The Bears made 11 3-pointers.  Jeff County North went on a 13-4 run in the second quarter to close the gap and would outscore Sterling 32-21 in the second and third quarters. Sterling had 20 points to Jeff County North’s 17 through the fourth quarter and overtime periods.

The Bears (20-4) will play last year’s defending 2A state champs Berean Academy (23-1) at 8:15 p.m. tonight.
