It’s important to maintain partnerships with Fort Riley

By Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

I want to thank all the individuals and organizations assisting our statewide efforts to support Fort Riley during the Army’s Supplemental Programmatic Environmental Assessment process. By taking time to send in a public comment, you demonstrated to the Army the importance of the fort, not only to the state and the Flint Hills, but also to the Army itself and its ability to cost effectively accomplish its important national security mission.

The next step in the process will be a “listening session” conducted by Army officials at 30 installations, including Fort Riley. We have not received notification of the date of the Fort Riley session, but when the date is announced, I urge each of you to attend and once again demonstrate the everyday sup-port you provide to men and women in uniform and Army civilians in Kansas, and in particular those assigned to Fort Riley.

It will be many months before the Army makes a final decision about how and where it will downsize. In the meantime, it is important that each of us strengthen the partnerships we have with Fort Riley.
