Riley County commissioners agreed Monday to appoint an interim director for the health department, and to eliminate some of the more expensive advertising options for finding a permanent director.
Current Riley County Health Department director Susie Kufahl recommended the hiring of an interim director, saying no members of her staff felt they had the experience to take on the job on an interim basis.
Kufahl announced her resignation last week. It is effective April 1.
Human resource manager Cindy Volanti also brought some complication to the search, telling commissioners the headhunter programs she had researched ranged in price from $1,500 up to $27,000. Commissioners found all of those options too expensive to justify.
Volanti noted that she had already advertised with the League of Kansas Municipalities, Kansas Association of Counties, the Riley County website and local newspapers. For now, she said, those are a fine starting point.
“Let’s continue with what we’ve got then go forward if the local response isn’t great,” Commissioner Dave Lewis said.
The commission requested more information on the least expensive of the headhunter sites, one called governmentresource.com, to see about using that site’s email blast program to find an interim director. Commissioners also advised Volanti to contact applicants from the 2011 search that resulted in the hiring of Kufahl to see whether they wished to apply for either the interim or full-time position. Volanti said she would present her new batch of research at Thursday’s commission meeting.
