Indians tie for 4th in Lawrence

By Grant Guggisberg

The Manhattan High girls’ golf team battled through the second leg of its busy week on Tuesday in Lawrence, tying for fourth place in the Lawrence High Invitational.

The Indians shot a 355 to tie with Maize and finish behind three Kansas City schools in the 24-team tournament.

A day after firing her best round of the season, Kelsey McCarthy kept it going on Tuesday, shooting an 83 and taking the 10th place medal after a scorecard playoff. Kylie McCarthy tied for 11th with an 84, Hannah Devane shot a 90, Anna Jackson shot a 98, Cassidy Harper shot a 110, and Amy Levin shot a 114 to round out the scoring.

Olathe Northwest won the tournament with a 345, with Shawnee Mission East and St. Thomas Aquinas tying for second with a score of 349.

Manhattan coach Chris George said he is glad to see Kelsey McCarthy get back to playing to her capabilities.

“Kelsey had her best showing in a tournament thus far this year,” he said. “She has been working hard during practice and on weekends after playing somewhat average for the last couple of weeks. She seems to have gotten her timing back and played with a lot of confidence today.”

George said Kyle McCarthy played well on all but one hole.

“Kylie had a solid round except for one hole which took her out of the top 10,” George said. “She played in a group that was pretty slow and I was proud of her patience. Somehow she got paired up with the No. 5 players from three other schools. Being our No. 1, she usually plays with the other school’s No. 1 players, and usually they have the whole course out in front of them and move pretty quick.”

George said Devane played a solid round and was consistent all day.

“Hannah was pretty consistent and didn’t have any really big scores, just too many doubles,” George said. “The people that shot the best today were the ones who were able to adjust to the increasing speed of the greens as the day warmed up. We talked about it, but talking and doing are two different things.”

Manhattan takes today off before traveling for the western swing of its tour of Kansas, playing in the Hutch Invitational at Carey Park in Hutchinson on Thursday.
