Indians take 5th at Titan Classic

By Grant Guggisberg

After losing its opening match on Monday, the Manhattan boys’ soccer team fought through the consolation bracket to take fifth at the Titan Classic with a 3-0 victory over Liberal Saturday.

Jonathan Turnley had two goals in the match, one off a penalty kick in the fifth minute, then again on an assist from Eric Gray in the 31st minute of the first half.

Jacob Stutheit scored nine minutes into the second half on an assist from Peter Maier.

“We had some chances to really put them away and we didn’t quite get that done,” coach Frank Alonso said. “But overall we played well.”

Leading 2-0 at halftime, the team was especially focused on keeping its foot on the gas.

“We addressed that at halftime,” senior Killian Gorman said. “We weren’t going to let them have a chance to get back in it.”

Manhattan hosts its home opener Tuesday against Shawnee Heights at 6:15 p.m.
