Indians take 4th at Hayden tourney

After sweeping through pool play at the Hayden Invitational on Saturday, the Manhattan High volleyball team came into the semifinals as a top seed in bracket play.

But after two hard-fought sets, Manhattan fell to Silver Lake 27-25, 25-20, to land in the third-place match, where they fell to St. Thomas Aquinas 25-17, 25-18 to take fourth place.

The way the day started, fourth place would have been a stretch. Opening pool play against Hayden, Manhattan dropped the first set 25-12, but rallied in the following sets, winning 25-20 and 25-23 to get the win over the Wildcats.

The comeback win translated into more victories as Manhattan got revenge on eventual tournament champion Mill Valley, winning 25-18, 25-21.

Manhattan defeated KC Ward 25-16, 25-7 to sweep its pool.

Madi Fief had four aces on the day, while Savannah Roberts had three. The kill leader was Kaci Cink with 31, while Jessie Kujawa had 22 and Lauren Goralczyk had 21. Savannah Thaemert had 20 kills on the day, 10 of which came in the opening match against Hayden.

Kelsey Schroll had four solo blocks and six assists, with Goralczyk chipping in three solos and seven assists. Kujawa had three solos and six assists.

Aubrey Jung had 105 assists on the day with 32 digs to earn all-tournament team honors, while Fief led with 39 digs. Roberts had 31 digs. Kenzie Miller had 25 digs.

Manhattan hosts Concordia, Topeka West and Topeka High on Tuesday in a quadrangular meet at 5 p.m.
