Indians’ mile relay team tops among Kansas schools

While most of the Manhattan High track and field team spent the weekend in Emporia at a two-day meet, several members of the team instead traveled to Lawrence for the KU Relays.

Among those competing on Friday were junior Alaina Schroeder in the two-mile, as well as a group of Indians competing in the 4x1600.

The relay team of James Leblow, Michael Melgares, Josea Alvarado and Chris Melgares finished fifth in the race, while coming in first place among Kansas teams. The team finished in 18:45.97, finishing ahead of cross-country powerhouse Shawnee Mission Northwest. Rockhurst won the event in a time of 18:31.00.

Schroeder finished 15th overall in the two-mile in a time of 11:31.54, which was eighth among Kansas schools. On Saturday, Schroeder finished 29th in the 1,600 with a time of 5:22.04.

Melgares finished 22nd in the 1,600 run on Saturday with a time of 4:26.28. Leblow finished 34th with a time of 4:33.39.

Results from the rest of the track team’s trip to Emporia were not available at press time.
