While no team scores were recorded at Washburn Rural’s track meet on Thursday, that didn’t stop the Manhattan Indians from cleaning up in most events.
On the boys’ side, Jacob Harden won the long jump (20-5) and the triple jump (40-8 1/4). Gabe Caldas (46-1) won the shot put while Jacob Holloway (172-8) won the javelin.
Brandon Nowlin (138-3) won the discus with a solid day, while Chris Melgares (4:32.72) won the 1,600 meter and Evan Williams (2:02.00) won the 800 meter. Michael Melgares (10:15.40) won the 3,200 meter in a Manhattan sweep, with Isaiah Koppes (10:17.30) and James Leblow (10:20.60) taking second and third.
The boys’ team took third in the 4x800 relay behind Rural and Seaman, while taking third in the 4x400 as well, behind Seaman and Topeka High. Manhattan took second in the 4x100 relay, behind Topeka High.
For the girls, Stephanie Shanower won the discus (118-5) and took second in the shot put (33-5), finishing behind Kaylee Kipp (36-9). Kylie James took second in the discus wth a 114-7 throw, while ReJoyce Bryant (16.3) won the 100 meter hurdles.
Matty Mahan took second in the high jump with a 5-0 jump.
In the distance races, Alaina Schroeder won the 1,600 meter well ahead of the rest of the field, finishing in a time of 5:19.6. Emily Van Natta took second with a 5:51.3. Emily Liebe took first in the 800 meter in a time of 2:34.7, while Amanda Frakes took second in the 3,200 meter in 13:08.2. Taylor Smith and Ashlynn Kleinbeck tied for second in the pole vault with 6-6 jumps.
In the girls’ relays, Manhattan won the 4x800 in a time of 10:53.5, ahead of Topeka High’s 11:15.9. In the 4x400, the Indians (4:25.6) took second place behind Washburn Rural (4:24.0). Manhattan (0:51.6) also took second in the 4x100 behind Topeka High (0:50.6).
Manhattan travels to Topeka High’s track meet this Friday.
