Hope man arrested in rodeo horse theft

By Bethany Knipp

A man was arrested last week for alleged involvement in a horse theft at the Kansas State University Rodeo.

Monte Johnson, 50, Hope, was arrested Saturday on charges of felony theft, battery, battery against a law enforcement officer and obstructing the legal process.

K-State Police Capt. Don Stubbings said the suspect reportedly rode the horse to steal it.

Stubbings said the horse, whose owner’s information wasn’t available at press time, was found wandering the area around Weber Arena, where the rodeo was held.

The horse was returned to its owner and was not injured.

Johnson was released on a $6,000 bond after being booked.
