Heartbreaking pet story can be of help to others

By Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

Regarding Joel Jellison’s Aug. 10 “Off the Beat” column, thank you for sharing your story about Sheldon. I know it is difficult to deal with the loss of a pet. Let it be comforting to know that you and Haley did everything you could to make his short time with you better than how his life started. He knew he was loved, and he loved you both for bringing him into your lives.

Sadly, as you learned, your story is not uncommon. I know many people would criticize someone who would buy a dog (or other animal) from a pet store, but the way I see it, you were rescuing Sheldon (at great emotional and financial ex-pense). While I do not re-commend or encourage anyone to buy a pet from a pet store for the reasons you experienced, I would not condemn someone for doing so.

The capacity of love and care you and Haley had for Sheldon I hope will eventually be shared with another dog in your future. If you take that step, I know you and Haley will love and care for him just as much and he will be fortunate to have you as parents.

Thanks again for writing your heartbreaking yet loving story. I know it couldn’t have been easy, yet you were compelled to inform others of your experi-ence.
