Hearing set in murder case

By Tim Weideman

JUNCTION CITY — A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a man facing murder charges in Riley and Geary counties.

Anthony Nichols, 33, of Kansas City, appeared Tuesday morning for a status hearing in Eighth Judicial District Court.

Nichols faces first degree murder and robbery charges in connection with the Sept. 7 shooting death of Anthony Nixon, 37, of Junction City.

During the hearing, District Judge Charles Zimmerman set Nichols’ preliminary hearing for June 25 at 10 a.m.

Geary County Attorney Steven Opat in court said he and Nichols’ attorney, Jeffery Wicks, agreed to set the preliminary hearing in June.

Nichols is confined in the Geary County Detention Center. He attended Tuesday’s hearing dressed in red inmate attire, his movement restricted by shackles.

After the hearing, Wicks declined to comment on why Nichols’ preliminary hearing was scheduled two months from now.

In addition to the Geary County case, Nichols is accused in Riley County District Court of first-degree murder in the death John Burroughs, 68, of Manhattan.

Riley County prosecutors have said Nichols on Sept. 6 shot but failed to kill Burroughs in his home at Redbud Estates trailer court.
