Two Manhattan boys earned top placings at a Missouri Valley Tennis Association tournament this past weekend in Wichita.
Daniel Harkin took second in the boys 12-and-under division, winning four matches before falling in the finals. Harkin got a walkover in the first round when Thomas Schotte of Kansas City withdrew. He then beat Slater Miller of Oklahoma 6-2, 3-2 (he retired due to injury at that point).
Harkin knocked off third-seeded Noah Winton of Missouri 6-2, 6-0 and then Zachary Weber of Nebraska, 6-3, 6-1. In the finals, Harkin fell to top-seeded Gabriel Diaz of Nebraska, 6-4, 6-1.
Brett Seaton took fifth in the 14-and-under division. He beat Timothy Ellis of Iowa 6-1, 6-0, then defeated Oklahoma’s Alexander Richards, 6-0, 6-1.
In the quarterfinals, Seaton fell to Neel Vallurupalli of St. Louis, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 in a third-set tiebreaker. He then came back to beat Collin Klumb of Kansas City, 6-0, 6-3, and second-seeded Alexander Downing of Kansas City, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker. Seaton knocked off Nam Pham of Kansas City, 6-3, 6-3 in the in the fifth-place match,
Both boys competed in the Wichita Outdoor Futures tournament.
