Hammel retiring from Riley County

Riley County boys’ basketball coach Kelly Hammel is retiring as both teacher and coach at the end of the current school year.

The longtime coach spent 32 years at Riley County, 26 of those as the head boys’ coach.

Hammel was an assistant for five years before taking over as the Falcons’ head coach in 1988. He finished with a 348-251 coaching record at Riley County. Hammel led the Falcons to six state tournaments, including four straight in the early 2000s, followed by another pair in 2005 and 2006.

The Falcons finished second in Class 3A with a loss to Maur Hill in 2006, while advancing to the semifinals in 2003.
