Police are investigating a handgun found in Sunset Cemetery Tuesday evening, but officials said there is no indication of a threat.
The handgun was found inside the cemetery near the stone wall adjacent to the Manhattan High School West Campus by a custodian who was on break, Officer Matthew Droge said.
Droge would not comment on whether the gun was loaded, but he did say “there was ammunition associated with it.”
In such situations, he said, serial numbers for found guns are run through the National Crime Information Center index to check if they are stolen.
Droge said the handgun, whose model is not being released, was not linked to any crimes.
Presently, police are still investigating why the handgun was in the cemetery, Droge said.
He said Riley County officers typically find several guns a year, all of which are checked through NCIC.
School officials notified parents of the finding Wednesday through email, stating that no threats were made and there is no increased danger to the public or the school.
Anyone with information on the handgun is asked to call the police department at (785) 537-2112.
