Six men in a Wamego office pool won a $10,000 lottery prize in a drawing last week.
The group, all servicemen for Wamego Telecommunications, found out that they held a winning Powerball ticket on Oct. 17.
“It was pretty exciting,” said Dylan Francis, who is one of the winners. “Definitely a rush.”
Francis went to Topeka on Monday to claim the prize for the group. He said he was the one delegated to go because the men couldn’t all take off of work at once.
The group’s winning combination was just one number shy of the jackpot, which at the time of the drawing was estimated at $70 million. To win the $10,000 prize, the group matched four of the five first numbers as well as the Powerball number.
Francis said the group would have to seriously consider letting anyone else into the pool in the future, because each person chose one of the six numbers on the winning ticket.
Francis said that while it was exciting to win, the amount each person in the pool received was only about $1,200. Francis said he would probably spend the winnings on small things.
As for the future, Francis said the group will continue to play in hopes of hitting the jackpot and definitely will play twice a week from now on. The drawings are made every Wednesday and Saturday. This weekend’s jackpot is estimated at $90 million.
